American artist Adam Pendleton’s exhibition titled shot him in the face occupies the Ground Floor gallery at BALTIC with one large-scale gesture—a wall that diagonally cuts across the exhibition space.
BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead is delighted to announce the four recipients of the BALTIC Artists’ Award 2017: Jose Dávila, Eric N. Mack, Toni Schmale and Shen Xin. As recipients of the award, they will each receive a 13-week exhibition at BALTIC, opening on 30 June 2017, £25,000 to create new work and a £5,000 artist fee.
Since 1949, New Contemporaries has organised an annual, open submission, touring exhibition for current and recent graduates. This high-profile platform has become nationally and internationally recognised as a barometer of work emerging from UK art schools. The selected artists will be announced in early summer 2017.
Co-curated by leading artist Edgar Arceneaux who has worked extensively with Dr Martin Luther King’s archive and BALTIC’s Chief Curator Laurence Sillars, BALTIC presents a major group exhibition of international artists whose work, each in its own way, sheds light upon this contemporary condition within a framework of the important legacies of Dr. King.
